Eton
Exuding prestige and tradition, the exclusive town of Eton has an array of beautiful, quaint properties along its High Street. Eton town and the nearby village of Eton Wick sit in East Berkshire, on the northern side of the Thames opposite Windsor.
The town is best known for Eton College, which is not only a thriving school and tourist attraction, but is immersed in land, properties and shops in the local area.
Most of Eton's housing is along the high street, where there are mainly terraced flats for renting as many properties have been bought on a buy to let basis.
The whole of Eton is a designated Conservation Area and there are many listed buildings.
There are some detached houses on the outskirts of town and just a handful of social housing.
Eton Wick is more modestly priced area, made up of farmland and a close knit modern residential area of semi detached properties and former council housing.
Most of the local area of Eton is in the greenbelt and two thirds is in the flood plain.
Community
Eton College is not only a thriving school and tourist attraction, but with its property and the numbers of people it bring into the area, is immersed in land and trade. Main areas of open space include the Brocas, which is recreation land on the Thames, managed by the college. Eton also offers Meadow Lane recreation ground, while in Eton Wick there are two play areas. Open land in Eton Wick is subject to 7th century common rights.
The Church of England and the Catholic Church have historic buildings in both Eton and Eton Wick and there is a Methodist Chapel in Eton Wick.
Eton has a tradition of independent traders dating back to the 15th century, but thrives on bringing a mix of the traditional and cotemporary.
A tour of Eton town centre will reveal 19th century pedestrian bridge links Eton to Windsor, you can see boat builders at the Eton College Boat House, historic pubs and a former coaching inn on the high street, with even the remnants of stock on the front of buildings and of course the grand entrance to Eton College.
Transport
There are two railway stations in walking distance of Eton at Windsor and Eton Central and Windsor and Eton Riverside. They offfer links to London, East Berkshire and Surrey.
Bus services run from Eton and Eton Wick.
There is easy access to the M4, which is the main road link into London, while London Heathrow is just 10 miles away.
Schools
Schools in the local area include Eton Porney CE First School and Eton Wick CE First School and there are a number of middle and upper schools in Windsor, including Windsor Boys' School and Windsor Girls' School.
